Parenting is one of life’s greatest challenges. To raise healthy, happy children, it takes a village. Join our village, Parents Ahoy, and attend while your little ones nap -- or entertain your child while attending the class. Discussions will focus primarily on understanding the Stages of development and highlighting the amazing social and emotional development of the infants, babies, and toddlers with the goal of prevention of problems. The format includes that parents will check in and share what they are enjoying about parenting; discussion will focus on challenge that parents are having that week. You are also welcome to send questions in advance of class. This online face-to-face support group is offered for a very reasonable fee, to allow on-going participation – just an hour a week, for years, as you raise your little ones.

Facilitator: Dottie Higgins Klein.  Forty years ago, while experiencing the both the joys and frustrations of parenting, Dottie and two friends created Parents Place, in Philadelphia, a center for parents to come together and share the awesome task of raising children. In preparation for offering parenting classes, the three founders took post-graduate training in Child Development with child psychiatrists at the Eastern Pennsylvania Psychiatric. The program director was Henry Parens, MD, author of Aggression in Our Children. Her experience with Parents Place propelled Dottie to continue her education in Family Therapy and then in Play and Sandtray Therapies.

In 1995, Dottie founded the Family and Play Therapy Center, a counseling center and a post-graduate training center for family and play therapists. Her seminal book for therapists, Mindfulness-Based Play-Family Therapy: Theory and Practice (Norton 2013), specifically emphasizes the parents’ awareness of their own challenges in the role of raising children. After 24 years of teaching Live in person in Philadelphia and online around the globe, Dottie’s recorded courses are now available as Webinars. She was recipient of the 2016 Association for Play Therapy’s Professional Training and Education Award.

This class for parents of children ages 3-12 builds upon her many years of experience working with all ages from Birth to 99, as well as upon her avid reading over the years to stay informed. In addition to her work with children and intergenerational families, Dottie has a strong interest in individual and couple therapy and continues her part time practice of therapy with children, parents, & families in Mt. Airy, Philadelphia, PA.

Come aboard Parents Ahoy! Dottie has long had the idea of offering a one-hour weekly group to support parents throughout their years of parenting. She is most interested in prevention of problems that happen in responsible, caring families. Travel to different ports, with varied and practical topics, on a global tour that also welcomes sharing cultural differences and similarities. Enjoy support in dealing with issues of your child’s emotional growth and development.
