About the Facilitator

Dottie Higgins-Klein, LMFT, RPT-S

Forty years ago, while experiencing both the joys and the frustrations of parenting, Dottie and two friends created Parents Place a center in Philadelphia where parents came together to share in community about the awesome task of raising children. In preparation for offering parenting classes, the three founders took post-graduate training in Child Development with child psychiatrists at the Eastern Pennsylvania Psychiatric. The program director was Henry Parens, MD, author of Aggression in Our Children. Her experience with Parents Place propelled Dottie to continue her education in Family Therapy and then in Play and Sandtray Therapies.

In 1995, Dottie founded the Family and Play Therapy Center, a counseling center and a post-graduate training center for family and play therapists. Her seminal book for therapists, Mindfulness-Based Play-Family Therapy: Theory and Practice (Norton 2013), specifically emphasizes the parents’ awareness of their own challenges in the role of raising children. After 24 years of teaching Live in person in Philadelphia and online around the globe, Dottie’s recorded courses are now available as Webinars. She was recipient of the 2016 Association for Play Therapy’s Professional Training and Education Award.

These weekly support groups build upon her many years of experience working with all ages from Birth to 99, as well as upon her avid reading and engagement over the years to stay informed. In addition to her work with children and intergenerational families, Dottie has a strong interest in individual and couple therapy and continues her part time practice of therapy with children, parents, & families in Mt. Airy, Philadelphia, PA.

Come aboard with Ahoy, Parents! These groups are the culmination of Dottie's has longtime ideas of offering one-hour weekly groups to support parents throughout their years of parenting. She is most interested in prevention of problems that happen in responsible, caring families. Travel to different ports, with varied and practical topics, on a global tour that also welcomes sharing cultural differences and similarities. Enjoy support in dealing with issues of your child’s emotional growth and development!
